The project’s geometry is derived from the tension between a rigorous formal system and the distinct asymmetry of the site conditions. While the southern boundary is bordered by a shallow duplex, the northern edge is defined by a three-story brick wall extending to the rear of the lot. Although many details of the original 1885 historic façade were lost to fire, an exhaustive restoration was undertaken to recover the building’s original character. In a dialogue typical of the Montreal vernacular, this traditional street frontage contrasts with the austere, stripped-back treatment of the rear elevation.
